| How it Works |
| The test detects circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and their clusters. – these tiny cells are released from the primary site of a tumour and act as the driving force behind metastatic spread of disease, whilst also offering unique insights into the molecular makeup of the cancer. CTCs are harvested from the patient’s blood sample by manipulating their ability to evade apoptosis and programmed cell death. This is done by exposing all the cells from the sample to an environment which stimulates programmed cell death (apoptosis). This causes all the healthy cells to die off. This leaves only potentially malignant cells to survive. Using this approach, it is possible to give a real-time assessment of live cancer activity in the body. We can also determine both tissue and organ of origin – through antibody staining in the lab. |
